• Named for the Prunus mume or plum blossom tree that blooms in late winter or early spring in China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Whether in shades of pink, white or red, the flowers give off a lovely, sweet scent. In Chinese culture, plum blossoms signifiy beauty, hope and resilience. They appear frequently in Chinese art - including its antique beadwork - almost always, with 5 evenly-spaced petals. See the final image below for an antique beaded tobacco bag made in China ca. 1900-1925 - showing a single pink 5-petaled flower. The other side of the bag presents a 4-character inscription likening tobacco smoke to scented flowers.
